History of NagbukelNagbukel, which is one of the interior towns of ilocos Sur is seven kilometers East of Narvacan and the Manila North Road, 39 kilometers from the provincial capital, Vigan City and 120 kilometers from San Fernando City, the regional capital, 200 kilometers from Baguio City, the Philippines' summer capital and 382 kilometers from Manila. This interior town which comprises of 12 barangays - Balaweg, Bandril, Bantugo, Cadacad, Casilagan, Cosocos (smallest), Lapting, Mapisi, Mission, Poblacion East, Poblacion West and Taleb (largest) is accessible by Jeep, Tricycle and other forms of land transportation. Based on the data obtained from the National Statistics Office on the Census taken 2000, it has a total population of 4,463 and a total l and area of 4,312.22 hectares which is unevenly distributed to its 12 barangays. The climate of the town is characterized by two distinct season: wet from May to October and dry from November to April. The principal crop is rice and the secondary crops are mongo, beans, corn and tobacco. The town boast of countless professionals who are doctors, lawyers, nurses, teachers, engineers, dentists, etc. most of whom are either working in their municipalities and cities or abroad. Many of these have likewise settled in their places of work. From the midst of times long past, there are three versions that account on how the municipality got its name. One tells about the existence of a high mountain somewhere in the eastern part of the town that could be seen afar which was so round and appeared like the top of a hat. When people saw this, they exclaimed, "ANIAN A NAGBUKEL" (How round it is). Some old folks related that because of the presence of three small round hills nestling midst the rice fields at the southern part of the the town which could be seen clearly when one is at the heart of the Poblacion, the town given the name "Nagbukel", meaning round. The third story has political and geographical references. There had been originally four barrios, Mission, Bandril, Poblacion East and Sarmingan that constituted the town. But these were scattered and between them were some barrios of Narvacan, now Poblacion West, Balaweg, Mapisi and Taleb. One elder in the vilalge uttered in the Ilocana dialect - "NAWARA, MASAPUL A BUKELEN" (They are scattered and should be united). Probably, the elder village leaders negotiated with the leaders of Narvacan (Nabgukel then was part of Narvacan) so that all places east of the Cayapa River were constituted as one area. After the successful negotiations, the people exclaimed "NAGBUKEL". The people since then up to the present called the aggregated area, NAGBUKEL. |
Nagbukel is politically subdivided into 12 barangays.
